A lot has happened in the two months since Connect. For many of you, our new Oculus Quest 2 headset is your first foray into VR. Congratulations! We hope you’re having a good time exploring our rich (and ever-growing) catalogue, and we’re glad you’ve joined us in building this platform for the future. And if you upgraded to Quest 2 from a previous headset, we hope you’re impressed by its capabilities.
But 2020 isn’t over yet, and we have a few more surprises left before the holidays. At Connect we teased various improvements to the Quest Platform, including a new system-level fitness tracker and support for 90Hz gaming on Quest 2—both natively and through Oculus Link. We’re excited to start rolling out those features with today’s v23 software update, which also coincides with Oculus Link exiting beta!
If that’s not enough, we’re also enabling app gifting later this month. Surprise! You’ll find more details on all these new features and highlights below.
A lot of you choose to exercise in VR on a weekly or even daily basis, and even more of you are getting exercise in VR without consciously thinking about it. Starting next week we’ll be rolling out Oculus Move, a system-level fitness tracker for both Quest and Quest 2 that works across all games and experiences, fitness-centric and otherwise.
Move helps you track how many estimated calories you’ve burned and how long you’ve been active, whether slicing through enemies in Until You Fall or through targets in Supernatural. You can even set daily goals, if you’re hoping to form a new habit. It’s a great resource, whether you’re heavily invested in VR as part of your fitness regimen or just curious how a casual hour of Beat Saber compares to other activities.
We’re rolling Move out gradually, so don’t fret if you don’t see it in your library immediately. It’s coming, and soon!
We’re excited about 90Hz support on Quest 2, and we know many of you are excited as well. With v23, we’re broadening support for 90Hz across the entire platform. While you could already opt-in to 90Hz mode in the Home Environment, Explore, Store, Browser, and Oculus TV via our Experimental Features pane, v23 opens the floodgates. Starting today, all system software including Home, Guardian, and Passthrough will run at 90Hz by default, and we’re allowing developers to start shipping Quest titles with native 90Hz support.
You can try it out soon with SUPERHOT, Echo VR, Beat Saber, Vacation Simulator, Job Simulator, Racket: Nx, and Space Pirate Trainer, all of which will support 90Hz in the near future. Once you have the v23 software and the latest game update for these titles, you’ll be running at 90Hz wirelessly on Quest 2, with no additional effort on your part. Easy! And stay tuned, because there are undoubtedly more supported games to come.
We’re bringing 90Hz support to Oculus Link as well! Starting today, Quest 2 owners will be able to toggle between 72Hz, 80Hz, and 90Hz right from the Oculus PC App.
As part of v23, we’ve also improved Oculus Link’s visual quality, and provided a new interface for managing your graphics settings. We’ve retuned our automatic graphics profile settings to squeeze more performance out of your graphics card by default. For our more advanced users we also added a slider under Graphics Settings so you can adjust the App Render Resolution directly.
And as we pass Link’s one-year anniversary, we’re excited to announce it is now officially exiting beta! We debuted Link last November, bringing “the best of both worlds” to Quest (and now Quest 2). Link gives you the freedom that comes from Quest’s untethered all-in-one form factor and the ability to plug into a compatible PC and unlock the best games the Rift Platform has to offer, from Asgard’s Wrath to Lone Echo to Respawn’s upcoming Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.
Exiting from beta is only the beginning for Oculus Link, and we have many new features on the horizon—including the improved user interface we teased at Connect. We’re proud of this milestone though, and grateful for the reception Link’s received from the community.
Finally, we’re adding new ways for you to share VR with your family and friends during the holidays. Feeling generous? Later this month we’ll be rolling out App Gifting, letting you purchase games or experiences through the Oculus Store (via a browser or the mobile app) and send them to a friend. Just look for the “Buy for a Friend” button on the website or tap the “?” menu on the mobile app, and make sure you have their email address handy. And if you’re lucky enough to receive a gift, you can redeem via your browser or the mobile app as well.
With the holidays right around the corner, it’s the perfect time of year to gift a few games to the Oculus owner in your life, and we're excited to get this feature in your hands. After all, we're only a week away from the Black Friday Oculus Store sale...
We’ve also made it easier than ever for those outside the headset to tag along with you on VR adventures. Earlier this month we launched a new way to cast from your headset to a desktop browser window. Just visit oculus.com/casting using either Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, sign in, then use the “Cast to Computer” option in your headset. And later this month we’re adding the ability to record your screen while casting to the Oculus app on iOS or Android so you can capture what’s happening in the headset—whether you want to take those clips and edit together a highlight reel of Until You Fall fights, or share an amazing Beat Saber performance directly to your social feeds.
Note that the v23 release is rolling out gradually and will become available to everyone in the coming days. If you don't see the update in your headset yet, you can check again later by going to Settings > About > Software Update.
